Fantastical by Marija Bulatovic is a delightful, engaging read that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Fantastical is a collection of personal stories from a country and region that was once known as Yugoslavia. This memoir includes a mix of the region’s legends, traditional tales, folklore, and Yugoslavian family life and culture, and most importantly, offers a rare first-person account and look into Yugoslavia’s rich tradition, culture, and history. The book contains a collection of several short stories, often accompanied by actual photographs and pictures of times gone by. This is definitely a book to have on your book shelf that can be read by generations to come.Marija Bulatovic writes great prose and I thoroughly enjoyed reading her stories and anecdotes. Marija’s voice comes across as genuine and passionate and her love for Yugoslavia shines through in every page of the book. Marija’s writing style is simple, engaging, at times witty and humorous, and from the heart. One gets the impression that here is someone who is truly happy to share their knowledge about their rich culture with the rest of the world. I am interested in travel and cultures from all around the world, and so this type of book is particularly appealing to me. Once I started reading this book, I couldn’t put it down and read it all within three days. This is one of those books that I will go back to and re-read over and over again. I would highly recommend it for anyone of any age.
